Who is Eligible?
All licensed teachers employed by the Los Alamos Public Schools
District are eligible to apply for Great Ideas Grants. Support
personnel, students, parents, administrators and community members are
encouraged to partner with teachers, though they may not submit a grant
as the primary applicant. Applicants may apply as individuals or as
part group. Educators within specific grade levels, subjects and
schools are encouraged to collaborate. One application my be submitted
per teacher in each grant cycle.
The Teacher Grants program provides an opportunity for enriching
academic experiences for students. Its purpose is to support teachers
who have ideas for enriching the curriculum or providing students with
unique learning experiences. The program enables the purchase of special
materials or resources for the classroom, which are not typically
available through the schools' budgets.
The grants were awarded for the first time in April 2008. $5,652
For the second time grants were awarded in 2009. $5,000
For the third time grants were awarded in 2010. $5,000
A committee consisting of educators, LAPS Foundation Board and staff
reviews applications. The identity of the applicants and their school
affiliation is kept from the committee members during the review
process.
Applications are judged on the following criteria:
- potential to improve student achievement
- number of students who will benefit
- creativity of project or innovative approach
- potential for continuation and/or replication
- cost effectiveness and realistic budget
- potential to enhance instructional skills
Grantees are asked to provide the Foundation with a final report at
the conclusion of their project. This report includes items such as: a
financial statement, an evaluation of the program's effectiveness, and a
narrative describing how students and the teacher benefited from the
project.
